The 4th Local SoH Forum Review

The 4th Local SoH Forum was held in Rye East Sussex on
6 February 2015!

The event a small and intimate gathering (3 people) took place on 6th February with key challenges relating to remarkable journeys coming to the surface. The group arrived at common ground at the close of the event, brought on by the holding of the space and the opening and trust that this SoH approach engenders. Participants confirmed their wish to bring other interested parties for the next event and expressed their support for the ‘safe place’ despite initial misgivings and feelings of vulnerability.

The 3rd Local SoH Forum Review

The 3rd Local SoH Forum was held in Harrogate on
2 February 2015!

We had another inspiring local forum in Harrogate where many of the challenges shared were regarding the achievement of balance in people’s lives. We chose to explore the challenge of a man who works most of the week as an IT manager with the National Health Service in the UK and the rest of the time as a coach with a particular interest in values-centred development. His challenge was about how to achieve a good balance between these two roles and whether there was scope to integrate his passion for people and organisational development within his “employed” work. He had tried previously to exploit the synergy of his skills and values within the NHS but so far had been unsuccessful. The thoughts and questions of forum members were insightful and creative, providing him with some great avenues to explore. Since the forum he has been back in touch with good news that new opportunities are already emerging.

The second Local Spirit of Humanity Forum

The second Local Spirit of Humanity Forum was held in Harrogate on 10 November 2014!

As planned, those present shared their most significant challenges in values-centred governance. Every challenge presented was compelling and would have been a great topic for exploring.  After consideration, the challenge we chose to work on was regarding a project to engage with people from a council estate in the northwest of England where unemployment is high, health is poor and people have low aspirations to improve their lives.  The local authority and various institutions have tried to intervene but have been unable to achieve sustainable transformation.  The specific challenge was about how to adopt a more “bottom-up” approach that really engaged the people with compassion, taking account of their world as they saw it.  The idea being that, with time and rapport, people would come to know their own strengths and feel supported to be proactive in improving their lives and community.  After the action learning rounds, our challenge owner made a commitment to take the ideas from this forum to the next working party in order to determine the best way forward.  What particularly resonated was a suggested approach to ask people how they wanted their community to change and what effort they were willing to commit to do this.

The next forum is in Harrogate:
6pm for 6.30pm – 8.30pm on Monday 12 January 2015
The Primeast office, 5 Greengate, Cardale Park, Harrogate HG3 1NP, UK
